Memoirs of My Indian Career $40.98 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER X THE CENTRAL PROVINCES Sir John Lawrence had been ready to give me a Chief Com- missionership if nothing higher was available, and provided I could get rid of my character of judge?and after the Famine Commission was ended, he pressed on me the acceptance of the Central Provinces. I hesitated a good deaL I was entitled shortly to retire on an annuity. I had had a long spell of work?was rather home-sick, anil hardly thought a Chief Commissionership sufficient promotion. Seeing how great a function the Chief Commissioner exercises, it now seems rather folly that I should have had such ideas at the age of forty-three;?but then I had come to a sort of kingdom in the Cis-Sutlej States at thirty-one, and now I seemed to myself very mature. However, I formally resigned the judgeship of the High Court, in accordance with the previous stipulation that I should be entitled to do so, and I was then gazetted Chief Commissioner. When I accepted the office I had told the Governor-General that I must go home for a little time, and that I was not sure that I should stay in the Central Provinces very long. But he was very kind, and humoured me in that respect; I was appointed on my own terms. In the spring of 1867 I went home to complete my famine inquiries and see my family. That reunion, however, was much damped by domestic losses. A few months before both my brothers had lost their wives, and very shortly before my return my very dearyoungest sister died. I was then in London little more than to enable me to look up the old famine papers in the India Office, and get materials for my final report, which I shortly sent in. For a short period in the summer I occupied Edenwood, which some years before had become entirely my own?my obligations to the trustees having been finally… |

Proud Servant: The Memoirs of a Career Ambassador $8.98 Ellis O. Briggs (1899-1976) entered the Foreign Service of the United States in 1925. During the next 37 years he was ambassador to seven countries: the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Czechoslovakia, Korea, Peru, Brazil, and Greece. An eighth appointment, to Spain, was cancelled when he retired due to illness. He also served in Cuba, Chile, Liberia, and China. His memoirs are an exuberant record of a gifted diplomat. Briggs reached the highest rank attainable in the Foreign Service — Career Ambassador — and received the Medal of Freedom from President Eisenhower for his service in wartime Korea. He gained a reputation for successfully handling large diplomatic missions and dealing with difficult situations. But his greatest virtue was his honesty, his passion to report things just as he saw them and make policy recommendations regardless of conventional wisdom in Washington. He employed a high sense of humor, often to devastating effect, on bureaucrats at home as well as adversaries abroad. His strong views about policy sometimes placed him in conflict with others; fellow Dartmouth graduate Nelson Rockefeller had him fired from the Foreign Service because of disagreements (Briggs soon returned to the Service). A down-to-earth New Englander with an abiding love of the outdoors, Briggs was devoted to his wife and family as well as to his country. Proud Servant is full of insights about the practice of diplomacy in this century and provides a fascinating account of the modern Foreign Service. |

Career Girls $8.49 Director Mike Leigh follows up his Oscar-nominated SECRETS AND LIES with CAREER GIRLS, a bittersweet drama that deals with the passage of time between two friends. Annie (Lynda Steadman) and Hannah (Katrin Cartlidge) were college roommates in London. Six years later, Annie is taking the train back into London to reunite with her friend. The resulting connection sparks flashbacks from the past, where we learn that Annie was even more shy and defensive than she is currently. Helping to pull her out of her shell was Adrian (Joe Tucker), a fellow student who had an affair with both girls while they were still in school. While apartment hunting for Hannah, they bump into Adrian, who is now a real estate agent. Sadly, he doesn’t remember either of them. The reunion also triggers memories of Ricky (Mark Benton), an overweight, self-conscious friend whose fragility seemed ready to cave him in at any moment. When Hannah and Annie track Ricky down, they find that he has only gotten worse and are forced to reevaluate their current lives and face up to their muddled discontentment. Steadman, Cartlidge, and Benton deliver subtle yet deeply engaging performances in CAREER GIRLS, another moving character study from acclaimed director Leigh. |

Blackness and Modernism: The Literary Career of John Edgar Wideman $32.48 Blackness and Modernism: The Literary Career of John Edgar Wideman by James W. Coleman During his career as a writer-intellectual, John Edgar Wideman in his personal life has overcome feelings of alienation from the black community and has reoriented himself as a participant in black culture. In his fiction, as James W. Coleman, the author of this study, shows, Wideman has effected a similar shift, using modernism and post-modernism to bring his intellectual characters out of their isolation and into contact with the needs, concerns, and traditions of black people. Before he could write about this shift, Wideman had to inform himself about black culture. An eight-year period of immersion in the works of nineteenth and twentieth century authors gave him the resources he needed. Using them he was able to circumvent modernism’s dead-end, pessimistic world view and at the same time chart a new course for other, similarly estranged black intellectuals. Coleman identifies three main stages in Wideman’s career: the early books (A Glance Away, Hurry Home, and The Lynchers); the Homewood trilogy (Hiding Place, Damballah, and Sent for You Yesterday); and the recent books (Brothers and Keepers and Reuben). Blackness and Modernism is the first comprehensive study of Wideman and his novels, and it shows him to be a writer emerging as a major figure in black and American literature. It shows him too as a writer whose progress has been to move away from such modernist masters as Eliot, Faulkner, and Joyce into the rich world of black culture, while retaining modernist techniques. Included also in Blackness and Modernism is Coleman’s interview with Wideman, conducted in 1988. James W. Coleman is a professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. |

Career Opportunities $12.71 John Hughes strip-mines familiar terrain — in this case his own past successes — in this comedy that Hughes produced and scripted, directed by Bryan Gordon. Frank Whaley stars as Jim Dodge, a 21-year-old con-man who goes from job to job but likes to put on a facade of success. As Career Opportunities begins, he has just been fired from another job and has been hired by the local Target store manager (played by an un-credited John Candy) as the night cleanup boy. After the manager locks Jim in the store overnight, he goes on a binge — playing with the skates, eating candy, watching television, and blasting the stereos. But then Jim discovers that he is not the only person in the store. Also there is rich girl Josie McClellan (Jennifer Connelly) who is spending the night in the store to get her father worried about her. Although Jim knew Josie in high school, when Josie wouldn’t even give him the time of day, here they click like two castanets and they romp around the store aisles to a pounding rock score. But just at the moment when Jim and Josie plan to run away together with the $52,000 Josie holds in her purse, two low-rent comic thieves — Nestor Pyle (Dermot Mulroney) and Gil Kinney (Kieran Mulroney) — break into the store and Jim and Josie decide to stick it out, saving the store from the bumbling crooks. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Mommy Wars: Stay-At-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families $14.98 With motherhood comes one of the toughest decisions of a woman’s life: Stay at home or pursue a career? The dilemma not only divides mothers into hostile, defensive camps but pits individual mothers against themselves. Leslie Morgan Steiner has been there. As an executive at The Washington Post, a writer, and mother of three, she has lived and breathed every side of the "mommy wars." Rather than just watch the battles rage, Steiner decided to do something about it. She commissioned twenty-six outspoken mothers to write about their lives, their families, and the choices that have worked for them. The result is a frank, surprising, and utterly refreshing look at American motherhood. Ranging in age from twenty-five to seventy-two and scattered across the country from New Hampshire to California, these mothers reflect the full spectrum of lifestyle choices. Women who have been home with the kids from day one, moms who shuttle from full-time office jobs to part-time at-home work, hard-driving executives who put in seventy-hour-plus weeks: they all get a turn. The one thing these women have in common, aside from having kids, is that they’re all terrific writers. Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley vividly recounts how her generation stormed the American workplace-only to take refuge at home when the workplace drove them out. Lizzie McGuire creator Terri Minsky describes what it felt like to hear her kids scream "I hope you never come back " when she flew to L.A. to launch the show that made her career. Susan Cheever, novelist, biographer, and New York Newsday columnist, reports on the furious battles between the stroller pushers and the briefcase bearers on the streets of Manhattan. Lois R. Shea traded the journalistic fast track for a house in the country where she could raise her daughter in peace. Ann Misiaszek Sarnoff, chief operating officer of the Women’s National Basketball Association, argues fiercely that you can combine ambition and motherhood-and have a blast in the process. Candid, engaging, by turns unflinchingly honest and painfully funny, the essays collected here offer an astonishingly intimate portrait of the state of motherhood today. Mommy Wars is a book by and for and about the real experts on motherhood and hard work: the women at home, in the office, on the job every day of their lives. "From the Hardcover edition." |

Project Renewment: The First Retirement Model for Career Women $3.48 For the first time in history, career women — women who have worked outside the home for most of their lives — are retiring. Without role models, they look to one another to face the changes this life transition brings. Career women from the Baby Boom and pre-Baby Boom, or Silent, generations are approaching retirement. They want to know what it means to suddenly find themselves back inside their homes after having devoted their lives to careers outside of them. These women are highly skilled, educated and successful. They have achieved visibility, status and influence. And because they are the first large group of American women to define themselves by their work, they have few, if any, models for retirement. "Project Renewment" will show women that giving up their careers does not mean giving up who they are. "Renewment" is a term the authors created as an alternative to the word "retirement, " which they associated with negative stereotypes and cliches. A combination of "retirement" and "renewal, Renewment" suggests optimism and opportunity, growth and self-discovery. "Project Renewment" is a grassroots movement among women who are close to retirement or recently retired and looking to connect with one another. The women of "Project Renewment" believe that retiring is a process of change and increasing self-awareness. As they redirect the commitment and passion previously dedicated to their careers, they transform and reshape their lives. "Project Renewment" provides these women with an enriched and safe environment in which to explore and confront the challenges that lie ahead as they leave behind a lifetime at the office, hospital, studio or courtroom. Diverse topics are discussed, such as Who am I without my business card? What if "he" retires first? What is productivity anyway? Why do I feel guilty reading a book on a Tuesday afternoon? How do I feel about not earning another dollar? Divided into two sections, "Project Renewment" offers insight and support in a friendly, humorous and meaningful way. The first part of the book addresses the challenges that career women tackle when looking to retire. The second teaches readers how to start and maintain their own "Project Renewment" group, so they can find support, inspiring relationships and even a few laughs as they look to get the most out of the rest of their lives. |

Zoot Suit: The Enigmatic Career of an Extreme Style $20.98 ZOOT SUIT (n.): the ultimate in clothes. The only totally and truly American civilian suit. -Cab Calloway, "The Hepster’s Dictionary," 1944 Before the fashion statements of hippies, punks, or hip-hop, there was the zoot suit, a striking urban look of the World War II era that captivated the imagination. Created by poor African American men and obscure tailors, the "drape shape" was embraced by Mexican American pachucos, working-class youth, entertainers, and swing dancers, yet condemned by the U.S. government as wasteful and unpatriotic in a time of war. The fashion became notorious when it appeared to trigger violence and disorder in Los Angeles in 1943-events forever known as the "zoot suit riot." In its wake, social scientists, psychiatrists, journalists, and politicians all tried to explain the riddle of the zoot suit, transforming it into a multifaceted symbol: to some, a sign of social deviance and psychological disturbance, to others, a gesture of resistance against racial prejudice and discrimination. As controversy swirled at home, young men in other places-French zazous, South African tsotsi, Trinidadian saga boys, and Russian stiliagi-made the American zoot suit their own. In "Zoot Suit," historian Kathy Peiss explores this extreme fashion and its mysterious career during World War II and after, as it spread from Harlem across the United States and around the world. She traces the unfolding history of this style and its importance to the youth who adopted it as their uniform, and at the same time considers the way public figures, experts, political activists, and historians have interpreted it. This outre style was a turning point in the way we understand the meaning of clothing as an expression of social conditions and power relations. Zoot Suit offers a new perspective on youth culture and the politics of style, tracing the seam between fashion and social action. |

1951 $152.63 Fifty years have now passed, yet it remains a baseball moment frozen for eternity. New York Giants slugger Bobby Thomson will seemingly always be a 27-year-old ballplayer in his prime, blasting a home run against the archrival Brooklyn Dodgers to vault his team into the World Series against the neighboring New York Yankees. Servicemen and servicewomen stationed in Korea were able to share in the moment via radio, helping to make it famous as the shot heard ’round the world. It was the biggest baseball highlight in a year in which the game witnessed many significant moments and stories. Future superstars Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle would make their debuts with their respective New York teams early in the 1951 season, just as legendary Yankee hero Joe DiMaggio was embarking on his final big-league campaign. Baseball commissioner Albert Happy Chandler was being ousted from office, just as maverick owner Bill Veeck was bringing his entertaining antics back into the game as the new owner of the St. Louis Browns. All-time great hurler Bob Feller was tying a record for career no-hitters, while Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds was tying a record for no-hitters in a single season. As baseball celebrates significant milestones in 2001 — the American League’s 100th anniversary and the National League’s 125th — there will be much reflecting on the game’s glorious past. What better time to roll the clock back 50 years to 1951 and relive one of baseball’s most noteworthy seasons, 1951: When Giants Played the Game. |

And because she was joyful and direct as all dogs are, she put her heart into everything from chasing tennis balls, to playing practical jokes, to protecting those she loved. A retired service dog with Canine Companions for Independence, Trixie became an assistance dog of another kind. She taught Dean to trust his instincts, persuaded him to cut down to a fifty-hour work week, and, perhaps most important, renewed in him a sense of wonder that will remain with him for the rest of his life. She mended him in many ways. Trixie weighed only sixty-something pounds, Dean occasionally called her Short Stuff, and she lived less than twelve years. In this big world, she was a little thing, but in all the ways that mattered, including the effect she had on those who loved her, she lived a big life. |

A Bountiful Harvest $36 A Bountiful Harvest introduces the work of a newly discovered photographer, A. M. Pete Wettach, whose career spanned the early to mid twentieth century. Wettach photographed the people of farming communities in and around his home state of Iowa during the Great Depression, World War II, and the postwar years, leaving behind an incomparably rich account of a way of life that has nearly vanished from the rural Midwest. At the time of his death in 1976, Wettach left behind an enormous collection–some tens of thousands of images–that provides a breathtaking complement to the work of other American photo-journalists of his time. A self-taught photographer who worked for the Farm Security Administration as a county supervisor in southeast Iowa during the 1930s and 1940s, he carried his camera as he traveled across the countryside visiting clients. Although Wettach was not hired as an FSA photographer, his pictures provide a fascinating parallel to the more famous work of his FSA colleagues Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, and Russell Lee. Yet unlike their photographs, his reveal an amazing intimacy and familiarity with his subjects, who were frequently his friends, neighbors, family members, and clients. Leslie Loveless has carefully selected the images that best represent both the creativity of the photographer and the poignancy of midwestern farm life during some of its most difficult years; she has also provided an informative essay on Wettach’s life and times. The pictures and corresponding written record provide a fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking account of these families’ lives. A Bountiful Harvest is as much a tribute to the people living today who have so much to share about atime and a way of life, as it is to the man who helped record it in so much detail. The work of Pete Wettach, hidden for decades, is poised to become a new national treasure. |

A House for Mr. Biswas $15.95 The early masterpiece of V. S. Naipaul’s brilliant career, A House for Mr. Biswas is an unforgettable story inspired by Naipaul’s father that has been hailed as one of the twentieth century’s finest novels. In his forty-six short years, Mr. Mohun Biswas has been fighting against destiny to achieve some semblance of independence, only to face a lifetime of calamity. Shuttled from one residence to another after the drowning death of his father, for which he is inadvertently responsible, Mr. Biswas yearns for a place he can call home. But when he marries into the domineering Tulsi family on whom he indignantly becomes dependent, Mr. Biswas embarks on an arduous-and endless-struggle to weaken their hold over him and purchase a house of his own. A heartrending, dark comedy of manners, A House for Mr. Biswas masterfully evokes a man’s quest for autonomy against an emblematic post-colonial canvas. |

A Quest for Life: An Autobiography $65 Early in A Quest for Life McHarg presents us with an arresting image. Describing the view from his boyhood home on the outskirts of Glasgow, he tells us that in one direction he could see the industrial miasma of smokestacks, tenements, and treeless streets, and, in another, the glories of the Scottish countryside. I was born and bred , he writes, on a fulcrum with two poles, city and countryside . Confronted with such a stark contrast, the man who was to become the founder of ecological planning began at an early age to turn literally from inhumane urban development and toward the beauty and power of Nature. Each chapter of this book illuminates key stages in McHarg’s life and in the evolution of his environmental awareness. We see him as a youth standing on a hillside beside the impressive Donald Wintersgill who, with the wave of his cane, lays out an entire village complete with lakes and forests, and thus introduces the astonished McHarg to the profession of landscape architecture. In some of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War he witnesses the magnitude of human destructive capability. Later, when he faces a crisis of conscience over his religious training and its exhortation to gain dominion over life and subdue the earth, he begins to develop a deep spiritual appreciation for the sanctity of Nature itself. His training as a designer and planner in the Modernist Bauhaus tradition, with its neglect of the environment; his bouts with tuberculosis that showed him the link between public health and city planning; his famous Man – The Planetary Disease speech before powerful industrialists – all stand as emblematic of battles that are still being fought today. A Questfor Life also chronicles the many triumphs in McHarg’s career. It offers fresh insight into the revolutionary design method behind his groundbreaking book, Design with Nature, and explores the development of geographical systems. We learn firsthand about his work on the celebrated regio |

After the Rain $1.36 Headlights off, a panel truck drives by moonlight across an open field, following tracks that have been there for decades … Nina Pryce and her husband, Phil Broker, couldn’t have more opposite views of the military. Broker’s loyalty to the men he served with in Vietnam is matched only by his certainty that they shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Nina, though, is a new breed, a decorated and ambitious vet of the first Gulf War. As Nina proceeds along her chosen career path, Broker — until his recent retirement, Minnesota’s most effective, unorthodox, and controversial undercover cop — finds himself struggling in the role of patient military spouse. The driver is a local entrepreneur taking advantage of a decades-old tradition of smuggling and bootlegging by crossing a border too vast and undermanned to be effectively patrolled … Incommunicado for months as part of a top-secret Delta anti-terrorist operation, Nina, with daughter Kit in tow, suddenly emerges in Langdon, North Dakota, a town in the heart of the Cold War Minuteman II missile belt. When Broker arrives to take Kit back home, he realizes that the legacy of those warheads still casts a sinister shadow across the desolate north border country, in the person of a damaged psychopath. Somewhere in the middle of this empty field he will cross, undetected, from one side of the U.S.-Canada divide to the other. He and his cargo — illegal cigars, whiskey, machine parts, or something much more terrifying — thus slip undetected across the longest undefended border in the world. Broker discovers he’s been drawn into an elaborate con within a con, made an unwitting participant in a black-bag anti-terrorist detail. But his anger toward Nina for involving him and putting their daughter at risk quickly fades as a larger, more deadly reality becomes evident. With time running out, husband and wife unite with local North Dakota law enforcement to form a last line of defense |

She begins to look at her surroundings with fresh eyes when her friend JoAnn becomes pregnant, and is dependent on Stick to both hide and resolve her dilemma . Suddenly, Stick sees new divisions emerge between old friends and neighbors, and even between her father and mother, whose troubles have roots in mysterious relationships established long ago. Learning to master her body and her emotions through dancing, Stick eventually flees to Manhattan in search of a career on Broadway. Although gifted, she ultimately finds that her gift should assert itself not just in control over the steps but also through passion. With this discovery, she finally returns home, where surprising new demands assert themselves. Stick prematurely takes on adult responsibilities by caring for her father after a gruesome fall. The legacy of JoAnn’s pregnancy and a startling revelation about her mother’s past force Stick to assume an unexpected family role. These new responsibilities, however, also free her to express her need for sex and intimacy, and she finally learns to accept the uncontrollable nature of love and pain. With bold precision, Lucy Ferriss paints the numbing routine of lives that appear stagnant but are fraught with violent change. Against Gravity poignantly illustrates a world where flightis a continual yearning and gravity an unconditional force. |
